How Can Wool Protect Your Fresh Produce?

Woolpack x My Foodie Box: WA's most sustainable food box

Did you know that the insulating liners you find in My Foodie Box are actually made from wool?

We are excited to use a sustainable alternative to the otherwise common polystyrene insulation. We use Woolpack a wool-based, natural insulation made from sheep’s wool.

Not only is our wool-based insulation good for the environment — it is also extremely efficient at keeping your Foodie Box nice and cool, even on a hot, WA Summer’s Day.

Read on to learn how.

How Woolpack Works

Our wool insulation is made from 100% felted sheep’s wool, carefully washed and using no chemicals. The wool is then sealed in a breathable film, which allows the ‘smart’ wool fibres to absorb excess moisture and lock-in bacteria, making it a perfectly hygienic solution. And you don’t need to worry; the wool does not smell any more than a new, clean woollen jumper would!

If you receive your My Foodie Box when you are not home, don’t worry: Woolpack can keep your box below the all-important 5°C for at least 8 hours and longer!

Biodegradable, Compostable and Recyclable

Woolpack is primarily made from wool and cardboard/paper-based materials, some of which are from recycled sources. These are renewable, biodegradable and fully compostable. This means we help reduce waste and we look after our environment.

Woolpack also uses a small amount of low-density polyethylene as a protective layer. This can be recycled or returned to the manufacturer for recycling. We also heard that Woolpack is actively looking to replace these with a plant-based alternative…

Sustainable and Responsible

Wool is one of the most sustainable natural materials, being available in abundance as a by-product of rearing sheep. In addition, our wool liners are made using only the waste wool from the underbelly of sheep. Yep, it is that sustainable!

It Beats polystyrene!

Polystyrene is made from styrene monomer and is non-biodegradable. In addition, polystyrene floats on water, adding to the accumulating amounts of waste in oceans and on beaches around our world. It can have serious effects on the health of animals as they can mistake it for food and swallow significant quantities. Furthermore, you cannot recycle polystyrene in your yellow-lidded bin in Perth. Several countries like India, Taiwan and Zimbabwe have already banned polystyrene foam in food services.

Finally, wool insulation has proven to keep temperatures low for longer than polyethylene and polystyrene. So not only is our wool insulation better for the world, it also does a much better job of combatting the Australian heat. It’s truly a win-win!
